I remember when I was planning to buy my first Chanel Classic Flap a few years ago. I was obsessed, like many other gals. I always dreamed of owning this iconic piece, but the price increases made the wait longer than expected. Finally, one day, I decided to pull the trigger, and I’ve never regretted it. I truly believe it was worth it.
Learning: Before my purchase, I learned every detail about this bag. I compared prices from retail and the vintage market and read countless reviews. I knew that if I was going to make such an investment, I wanted to be 100% sure of what I was buying. After gathering so much information, I had one condition in mind: I wanted my dream bag to be vintage.
Why Vintage? Besides the obvious reason—the price—I wanted the bag to be vintage because of its quality. There’s no doubt that vintage Chanel bags are extremely well-made. Their hardware is plated with 24k gold, giving them a beautiful and rich golden tone that contrasts with the smooth lambskin leather. Most vintage bags come in lambskin, as caviar leather for the small and medium Classic Flap was introduced in the ’90s.
Size and Features: I got mine in the small size, perfect for a night out or any occasion where you need just the essentials. Despite its size, it’s quite roomy. I can comfortably fit my iPhone 15 Pro Max, a cardholder, a key holder, a lipstick, and probably a hand sanitizer. The bag has a few compartments, including ones specifically for lipstick. The famous Mona Lisa pocket at the back is ideal for keeping a card or a ticket. The small flap inside keeps all your belongings secure.
Price: Be aware that even though vintage bags are cheaper than retail, their prices are expected to rise with each global price increase for Classic Flaps. Vintage bags aren’t exactly cheap either.
Buying Process: This is crucial when buying a high-end luxury bag, especially a vintage one, since counterfeit pieces are common on second-hand platforms. I chose Vestiaire Collective because they authenticate the item before it reaches you and ensure the item’s condition matches the description. This adds a layer of trustworthiness to the process. It’s important to verify the seller’s profile, inspect the item’s pictures thoroughly, and ask questions if you have any doubts.
Delivery: The delivery was quick; I received the bag within a week since the seller first sends the bag to Vestiaire Collective for authentication, and then they ship it directly to you. I still remember opening the package and being over the moon—finally, she was with me forever.
Care and Protection: Since these vintage bags are made of smooth leather, you need to take extra care because they can scratch more easily than caviar leather. Avoid spilling liquids on it or exposing it to rain, as the leather can get damaged. I recommend stuffing the bag with tissue paper to maintain its shape and storing it in its dust bag to protect it from dust and light.
Cons: One downside to vintage bags is their delicate nature, as the leather is more prone to scratches. However, the biggest issue for me is the strap length—it’s only 47 cm, making it impossible to use as a crossbody bag, which is my preferred style. Therefore, I have to wear it as a shoulder bag. Finally, I would say the price—it’s quite expensive, and every year, prices keep going up.
Would I Buy It Again? If something happened to my bag, I would definitely purchase it again. In fact, I hope to get the same bag in medium size someday soon.
Styling My Classic Flap: I love that this piece goes with almost everything and can instantly elevate your style. I enjoy creating looks that contrast street style with a more polished or preppy look. For example, this bag pairs perfectly with baggy jeans, a simple white tee, a nice blazer, and a pair of Samba sneakers. Honestly, vintage Chanel Classic bags are a must-have in any fashionista’s wardrobe. Vintage bags have so much character and a unique vibe, making any outfit cooler and more interesting.
