Big Apple Adventures: Exploring New York with a toddler

There’s nothing like the Big Apple. Everything in this city feels magical—or at least it does for me—and I’m confident that anyone experiencing it for the first time will feel its vibrant energy the moment they arrive. From iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Financial District to its rich cultural scene and diverse culinary options, New York is a city full of unique experiences and endless charm.

I sometimes get nostalgic about my time there. I was fortunate enough to live in the city that never sleeps when I was younger, single, and without kids, and those memories are priceless. Going back this time, as a mom with a toddler, was a completely different experience—but no less incredible! Though it felt like a challenge at times, it was absolutely worth it.

Navigating the City with a Stroller

One of our biggest “challenges” was transportation. You’d think the subway would be perfect, given it runs 24/7, but only about a quarter of the stations have elevators—essential if you’re carrying a stroller, like we were. So, if you’re solo with your child or if your little one isn’t a fan of carrier bags, this is definitely something to consider.

Plan for the Weather

Weather is another factor that can affect your trip, especially in winter. We went around Christmas, and while December in New York is typically freezing, we were lucky to have milder days with no snow. Still, we came prepared for the cold. A lightweight stroller like our Baby Zen Yoyo was a game-changer for us due to its ease of use, plus it came with winter accessories to keep our daughter warm and cozy. I highly recommend planning for cold weather gear if you visit during the winter months.

Dining with a Toddler

Food was surprisingly easy for us since our daughter eats pretty much anything, but of course, we had to skip a few places with menus not suited to kids. Another heads-up: many U.S. restaurants automatically bring big glasses of water—even for little ones. While thoughtful, this can sometimes be a recipe for spills! It’s something to keep in mind when dining out with young kids.

Activities for Toddlers in New York

There’s no shortage of toddler-friendly activities in New York. Of course, the weather may impact your plans. Since it was cold but not freezing, we were able to enjoy several outdoor playgrounds in Manhattan. One of our favorites was the Battery Playscape in the Financial District. It’s a beautiful playground with sensory features that our daughter loved.

If the weather isn’t on your side, the city’s children’s museums are fantastic alternatives. They offer indoor playgrounds, educational activities, and countless things for kids to explore. Our top pick was the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, which offers free admission on Thursdays from 2–5 pm.

Embracing Nature in Central Park

For families who love nature, Central Park is a must. It’s stunning, and the whole family can enjoy its many attractions together. We particularly loved the Heckscher Playground between 61st and 63rd Streets. Our daughter had an absolute blast on the high swings that soar up towards the treetops, making it a unique experience.

Holiday Magic in the City

A simple stroll through the city during the Christmas season is a magical experience for children. Watching my daughter’s face light up with wonder at the holiday lights and decorations was priceless. She especially loved the festive window displays at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, and Macy’s Herald Square. And, of course, we couldn’t miss the Rockefeller Center tree, where we enjoyed the beautiful view of ice skaters twirling below.

Stunning Views from Brooklyn Bridge & SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

For breathtaking views, the Brooklyn Bridge is a must-visit. It can get crowded, so bring snacks and water to keep your little one entertained if there’s a wait. Another incredible experience was the SUMMIT One Vanderbilt. This observatory offers panoramic views and interactive features that captivated us—and our daughter. Kids five and under get in for free, making it a great family-friendly option.

In another post, I’ll share more about this extraordinary city. Until then, enjoy every moment of your trip to New York! The Big Apple awaits!
